5 Real-Talk Tips to Beat Peer Pressure & Drama in School

Hey bestie!

It’s me again, Janet Brooks. I’m just like you — a high school student, a teen, and a girl. The peer pressure at this stage of life is not for the weak. That’s why I’m here to gist with you on some ways you can prevent it — because YOU CAN.

Let’s be real—have you ever felt like your classmates are trying to run your life? Like you’re stuck doing stuff just to fit in or impress people who don’t even care about your future? Trust me, we’ve all been there. But here’s the truth: you’ve got way more power than you think—and these 5 tips will help you beat the pressure and glow up your mindset.

1. Create a strong mindset to resist bad suggestions

When people try to talk you into doing stuff that doesn’t sit right with you, say a cute but solid:
“No, thank you.” Period.
Even if they ask again and again—don’t give in and do not feel guilty for not giving in. Stay true to YOU. You’re not being mean—you’re being real.

2. Associate with friends who focus on their academics

Wanna win in school and in life? Hang with the girls who are chasing good grades and talking about goals—not gossip. When you do this, you’ll stay focused, and you and your friends will motivate each other and have real conversations about the future. This is what we call positive peer pressure—and if you’re doing this, girl, you’re doing it right!

3. Seek help

If you find yourself stuck in a friend group that’s not good for you and don’t know how to leave, talk it out with someone you trust—a big sis, your mom, a teacher, or that one auntie who always keeps it 100%.
Sometimes, a lot is going on in our minds when it comes to peer pressure, like:

  • “Everyone’s rocking that new trendy bag—should I get one too, even if it’s expensive?”
  • “My classmates have the newest phone—now I feel embarrassed using mine.”
  • “They always have the most trendy clothes first… I need to be on that same level.”
  • “If I don’t have a boyfriend like them, will they think I’m boring?”

You don’t have to figure it all out alone. Real queens ask for guidance when they need it. Talk it out—it helps clear your thoughts and reminds you what truly matters.

4. Leave friends that aren’t in line with your purpose

Yeah, I know I already touched on this—but it’s that important, sis. The people you hang with? They matter. Stick with girls who are chasing dreams like you, not drama. When your squad shares your vibe and vision, you stay focused and level up together.
But if they’re going one way and your goals are in the complete opposite direction? It’s okay to let go. Not everyone is meant to walk your journey with you—and that’s totally fine. Protect your peace and your purpose.

5. Don’t allow the desire for material stuff on a classmate to lead you into bad company

Don’t be carried away by the fine clothes your classmates wear and end up following bad friends who make you focus more on dressing than on your purpose. This can cause your academic performance to drop.

Sis, remember this, your life is YOURS. Don’t let anyone else control it. You’ve got dreams to chase, goals to work towards, and a future that’s bright enough to light up the world. Stay true to you, stand tall, and always know: the real glow-up is when you choose YOU over pressure. You’ve got this!
