Many of us remember the first time our period came while we were in school. It can feel embarrassing or confusing, especially if you are not prepared. In Liberia, some girls even miss school during their period because they feel uncomfortable or afraid of staining their uniform. But the truth is, having your period is a normal part of growing up as a young woman. With the right preparation and confidence, you can manage your period well and continue attending school without shame.
Here are five ways you can manage your period in school.
1. Always Prepare Before Going to School
One important thing every girl should do is prepare before leaving home. If you know your period is coming, make sure you put a sanitary pad in your bag. Some girls also keep an extra underwear or small cloth just in case. Even if your period is not due yet, it is good to always have a pad in your school bag. That small preparation can save you from plenty embarrassment.

2. Change Your Pad Regularly
When you are on your period, it is important to change your pad after a few hours so you can stay clean and comfortable. If your school has a bathroom, you can quietly go there during break time to change it. Carry a small plastic bag or paper to wrap the used pad before throwing it away. Keeping yourself clean will help you feel more confident during the school day.

3. Wear Comfortable and Dark Clothing
Sometimes accidents can happen, especially during heavy flow days. Wearing dark skirts or keeping a sweater or jacket around your waist can help you feel more secure. Many girls in school understand this situation, so you are not alone. Being prepared with the right clothing can reduce your worries during class.

4. Talk to Someone You Trust
If your period starts suddenly in school and you are not prepared, don’t panic. You can quietly talk to a trusted friend, a female teacher, or the school nurse if there is one. Many girls help each other during these moments by sharing pads or offering support. Remember, periods are normal and nothing to feel ashamed about.

5. Take Care of Your Body
During your period, you may feel cramps or body pain. Try to drink water, eat good food, and rest when you can. Even though you may feel uncomfortable sometimes, it is still possible to attend school and participate in class. Taking care of your health will help you stay strong throughout your period days.

Remember, your period should never stop you from learning or achieving your dreams. It is a natural part of becoming a woman. When you prepare well, stay clean, and support each other as girls, school can remain a safe and comfortable place even during your period. Always remember that many other girls are going through the same experience, and together we can break the shame and support each other with confidence.
