Hey sis! Let’s talk about something we all see but hardly ever talk about without whispering. You know that “something” you find in your underwear? Yeah, that one. Don’t be shy; it’s just your body doing its job to keep you clean down there.
In Liberia, we often call it “whites” or just “discharge,” but did you know the color and the way it feels can tell you exactly what’s going on with your health? Whether you’re sitting in a hot classroom or heading to the market, knowing your body is power.
The Different Types of Discharge: What’s the Vibe?
Just like how the weather changes from the dry season to the rainy season, your discharge changes depending on where you are in your cycle. Here is the lowdown:
1. The “Clear and Stretchy” (The Safe Zone)

If you see something that looks like raw egg white clear, slippery, and stretchy don’t panic. That’s usually a sign that you are ovulating.
What it means: Your body is getting ready to release an egg. If you’re seeing this, you are at your most fertile.
Pro-tip: This is totally normal. It’s just your body’s natural lubricant.
2. The Milk White and Thin”

Sometimes, it looks like thin milk. It doesn’t really have a strong smell, and it doesn’t itch.
What it means: This is your everyday discharge. It’s the way your vagina “sweeps” itself to stay healthy.
Relatability check: If you’re wearing your school uniform all day in this heat, you might feel a bit damp. Using a thin panty liner can help you stay fresh.
3. The “Heavy White and Chumpy” (The Red Flag)

Now, if your discharge looks like spoiled milk or “clabber” (cottage cheese) and it’s making you itch like crazy, we have a problem.
What it means: This is usually a Yeast Infection. It’s super common, especially if you’ve been wearing tight jeans or wet clothes for too long.
Note: If it smells sour or makes you want to scratch in public, you need to see a nurse or talk to a trusted “aunty” to get some cream or medicine.
4. The “Gray or Yellow with a Smell”

If the color is looking a bit off, like gray or dark yellow, and the smell is “fishy” or just plain bad, your body is sending an SOS.
What it means: This could be Bacterial Vaginosis (BV) or even an STI.
The Golden Rule: Never try to “wash” it away by douching or putting soap inside. That only makes the “good germs” die and the “bad germs” take over.
5. The “Brown or Bloody”

If you see this right after your period ends, it’s just “old blood” leaving the building.
What it means: Your body is just finishing its monthly cleaning.
Warning: If it happens when you aren’t anywhere near your period and you’re feeling pain, it’s time to check in with a clinic.
Keep it Fresh, Sis!
To keep things balanced down there, remember these small things:
Cotton is your best friend: Wear cotton underwear so your skin can breathe.
Front to Back: Always wipe from the front to the back when you use the bathroom.
No “Sweet” Soaps: Your vagina is a self cleaning oven. Only use plain water or very mild soap on the outside. Never put anything inside to “scent” it!
Listen, being a girl in Liberia isn’t always easy, especially with the heat and the taboos. But your body isn’t a secret you should be ashamed of. Pay attention to what your “whites” are telling you, stay clean, and don’t be afraid to ask for help if something feels or smells wrong.
