5 Reasons Why Dropping Out of School Is Not an Option.

By Alice Nyeswah

Our Dreams Are Bigger Than Our Challenges

As Liberian girls, we face many things while trying to stay in school.

Some of us walk long distances to class, some struggle with school fees, and others deal with people in the community saying, “Books are not for girls.” But my sister dropping out of school should never be the answer. Education is one of the strongest tools we can carry to change our life, help our family, and build our country.

Below are five tips on why dropping out of school should not be an option:

1) Education Opens Doors for Our Future.

When you stay in school, you give yourself more opportunities. Maybe today you are sitting on a hard bench in a crowded classroom, but tomorrow you could become a nurse, teacher, journalist, or businesswoman. In Liberia, many successful women started from small schools in their communities just like us. When we drop out, we close many doors before we even see what is behind them.

2) School Gives Us Knowledge to Stand for Ourselves.

School is not only about passing exams. It also teaches us how to think, how to speak up, and how to understand the world around us. A girl who stays in school is more confident and better able to make good decisions for herself. When people try to mislead you or pressure you, the knowledge you gain from school helps you stand strong and say, “That one not for me.”

3) Dropping Out Can Bring More Struggles.

Sometimes girls leave school because of challenges like pregnancy, financial problems, or family responsibilities. But dropping out often brings even more difficulties later. Without education, it can be harder to find a good job or support yourself. Many women in our communities will tell you, “If I had the chance, I would go back to school.” Their stories remind us why we must keep pushing forward.

4) Your Community Needs Educated Girls

Our communities need girls who are educated and confident. When girls stay in school, they grow up to become leaders who can help solve problems in the community. Imagine being the girl who returns to your community as a doctor, a teacher, or a leader helping other girls succeed. By staying in school, you are not only helping yourself, you are helping the next generation.

5) Find Support and Never Be Afraid to Ask for Help.

If school becomes difficult, don’t keep the struggle to yourself. Talk to a trusted teacher, family member, or friend. Sometimes there are people willing to help with advice, encouragement, or even school support. Remember, every girl faces challenges, but the strong ones are those who keep going even when the road gets hard.

The journey in school may not always be easy, but it is worth it. There will be days when you feel tired or discouraged, but remember why you started. Your education is your power, your protection, and your pathway to a better future. So no matter what people say or what challenges come, hold your book tight and keep going. Dropping out is not an option, because your future is too important.
