Growing up as a teenage girl in Liberia is not easy at all. Between school, home responsibilities, and pressure from friends or even older people in the community, a girl can find herself in situations she never planned for. One of the biggest challenges many girls are facing today is early pregnancy. Below are five ways, why teenage pregnancy happens and you should take note of them:
1. Pressure from Boyfriends and Peers
Sometimes, a girl can be doing well, focusing on her books, then a boyfriend comes into the picture. He may start pressuring her, saying things like, “If you love me, you will prove it.” Even friends can add pressure, making it seem like it’s normal or expected. My sister, plenty girls fall into pregnancy because they don’t want to feel left out or lose someone. But real love will not rush you into something you are not ready for.

2. Lack of Proper Information
In many of our communities, people don’t like to talk openly with girls about relationships and their bodies. So some girls grow up without clear understanding. They hear small-small things from friends, which are not always correct. Because of that, they may not fully understand how pregnancy happens or how to avoid risky situations. Knowledge is power, my sister, what you don’t know can harm you.

3. Accepting Gifts and Financial Pressure
You know how things can be hard sometimes. School fees, lunch money, even basic things like slippers or copybooks can be a struggle. Some older men take advantage of that and start giving gifts or money. Before you know it, they expect something in return. Many girls enter these situations because they need help, but it can lead to pregnancy and even stop their education. It’s not easy, but being careful about what you accept can protect your future.

4. Lack of Parental Guidance and Support
Some parents are too busy or too strict, and it becomes hard for a girl to talk to them freely. When there is no open communication at home, girls may turn to outsiders for advice or comfort. Not everyone out there has good intentions. A lack of guidance can lead to wrong decisions that bring serious consequences like early pregnancy.

5. Low Self-Esteem and Desire for Love
Every girl wants to feel loved, valued, and important. But when you don’t see your worth, you may look for that love in the wrong places. Some girls agree to things they are not ready for just to feel accepted or cared for. My sister, your value is not in what you give to someone,it is in who you are. Loving yourself first can save you from many regrets.

My sister, teenage pregnancy is not just a mistake, it is something that can change your whole life. But the good thing is, you have the power to protect yourself. By understanding these situations and being mindful of your choices, you can stay focused on your education and your dreams. Don’t let pressure, lack of knowledge, or temporary needs destroy your future. Stand strong, know your worth, and remember, you have a bright future ahead that is worth protecting.
